If there ever was a Toronto contender for Diner Drive-ins and Dives, Chew Chew’s Diner fits the bill perfectly. Chew Chew’s Diner definitely deserves to have a line-up like other brunch places but thankfully when we went there wasn’t one. The place was still packed though and we took the second last spot right near the caboose.
The interior is Canadiana train themed and very charming. While train themed, you still get the feel of being in a 60’s style diner. Pretty great concept considering Chew Chew’s has been around just a few years.
Their menu is extensive. The egg options take up two pages with ever conceivable choice. The rest of the menu is classic; sandwiches, burgers and comfort food. Coffee and tea were ready almost before we sat down. The huge menu is going to take a couple visits to pick out my favourite egg brunch but today I went with the Egg Baba Ivanka. It is a veal cutlet pounded thin, breaded, fried, topped with 4 perfectly poached eggs, mozzarella and tomato sauce. Note that this could probably be enough for two people. While delicious I simply couldn’t finish it. The accompanying home fries were delicious as well.
Anthony had the bacon cheeseburger and fries. If you are looking for a classic burger you can’t go wrong with Chew Chew’s burger. It was a perfectly seasoned patty charred just right and had a nice beefy flavor. They used good old processed cheese that melted just right. Throw on some crispy bacon and fresh bun that is perfect meat to bun ratio and you have an excellent burger. Nothing fancy here but done just right. Delicious! The fries are the soft and fluffy type with a bold potato taste. I also liked that they didn’t over salt them and left that to the diners discretion.
I also have to mention the staff. They were very welcoming, polite and efficient.
So if you have passed by Chew Chew’s Diner and wondered what it was like, why not stop by and give it a try!
